6.Audio Podcasts

 Introduction

The impact of technology in today’s modern world is of utmost importance. The influence of technology is seen in economic, social political, entertainment and other sectors. Technology based education has received great hype especially during the last 2-3 years. Corona virus pandemic in fact popularized technology/online based education. Later even when the offline/regular mode of education was restarted, technology had already secured a significant and prominent role in education.

 PODCASTS

A radio programme that is stored in a digital form that you can download from the internet and play on a computer or on an MP3 player. It was formed on 2004 by former MTV video jockey Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer. They developed ‘iPodder.’ The iPodder was a program that let a user download internet radio broadcasts to their Apple ipod. Thus the term podcasts is a blend of two words ipod and broadcasts. Podcasts or the radio of the internet have gained increasing popularity especially inthe recent times during the covid pandemic.

Each podcast is a series created by a host and then published episode-by-episode online. The subscribers can then download and listen to each episode when it’s released.Anyone with basic equipment like a microphone, recording software, and a membership to a hosting platform can create their own show. The famous platforms where one can listen to podcasts are Apple podcasts, Spotify, Google podcasts, etc. Mostly podcasts are free, but the ones with good ratings can come with a price.

Benefits

2) Easier to listen to podcasts longer than reading

3) Excellent learning tool for visually impaired students

4) Expands imagination

5) Enriches listening and vocabulary

6) Can provide a part or full time income

7) Source of entertainment and knowledge

8) Incorporation of podcasts/ICT in classroom teaching, makes learning interesting


Disadvantages

Students have to have higher concentration via listening

Internet connection not easily accessible

Faulty equipment and system

Students can be bored or distracted

Lack of appropriate content for students

 

 Conclusion

Thus we can conclude by saying that podcasts has become an integral part of our lives.Be it listening to your favourite podcast (serialized fiction) on your way to school/college/work to listening to interviews, fictional audio books, motivational talks, etc - audio podcasts has definitely become a part of our lives as it interlinks both entertainment and knowledge.
