23.Review of Websites-4

Review of Websites for teaching grammar, Vocabulary, pronunciation and communication skills

“Becoming bilingual is a way of life. Every bone and fiber of your being is affected in some way as you struggle to reach beyond the confines of your first languages and into a new language, a new culture, a new way of thinking, feeling and acting. Second language learning is not a set of easy steps that can be programmed in a quick do-it-yourself kit. No one can tell you how to learn a foreign language, without really trying.”

English is the most commonly taught foreign language all over the world. As a result of this fact, materials designed for English language teaching have been increasing enormously. Besides all traditional resources, technology integrated language teaching provides many materials for language learning as well. Websites might be regarded as online teaching tools which can be very effective resources both for learners and teachers. Many websites are available and have been designed in order to help individuals learn and teach the English language.

What are websites?

A website is a collection of web pages and related contents that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. In other words, a website can be defined as a collection of publicly accessible, interlinked web pages that share a single domain name. It can be created and maintained by an individual, group or organizations to serve a variety of purposes.

Educational websites may include games, videos, or websites with resources related to the subject that serve as tools to enhance learning and teaching in the classroom. When it comes to the learning and teaching of English, the educational websites provide much to the learning of the language. It provides activities and resources to master the skills of language learning, it contributes much to the proficiency in language elements, it makes the person highly proficient at handling the language at ease.

There are various components which make educational websites interesting. First and foremost, it should have compelling headlines. It grabs the attention of students and makes it easy for them. So, a compelling, straight forward headline is so important. An educational website must have quality imagery. Defined user pathways are another important component of websites so that the users need not wander around in the website for what they want. Then comes, ease of navigation. Huge content in the website must possess organizational capacity. An educational website must have produced refined and curated content. These are only some of the important components.

Kartal and Uzun (2010) defined characteristics of websites in three categories. According to them, a good website should have a good user-friendly design where each part and section should be clearly seen and easy to use, it should allow for easy transition between sections, the colour should not tire the eyes, and it should be able to use some other programs.

An earnest attempt has been made on my part to take a review on some of the popular and useful educational websites which provide resources for reaching grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and Communication skills.
